Protection of extruders in polymer processing (case study)
Problem
The plastic granules produced by extrusion contain iron particles, as the customer often processes plastic regranulate heavily contaminated by ferrous materials. And these metal particles can cause damage to the extrusion equipment and result in high maintenance costs. Another negative impact are the downtimes due to the damaged extrusion equipment that cause additional costs and limit the production continuity.
Solution
Together with the extruder manufacturer, we designed the following magnetic separation solution for the customer.
As it was necessary to remove even very small ferrous particles, we proposed to integrate a drawer magnet into the production line. This drawer magnet is equipped with the strongest neodymium magnets, which generate a magnetic field of up to 18700 G! Thanks to this extremely strong magnetic field, it can separate very small ferrous particles (even in the size of 1 micron)!
The magnetic separator was placed under a hopper, feeding the plastic granules into the extruder. Considering the hourly processing capacity, we have chosen a device for DN 150.
In order to arrange for easy cleaning of the separator, he have placed in front of the separator a pneumatically actuated flap for the interruption of the material flow during the cleaning procedure.
Benefits of using the drawer magnet MSS-MC IN 150-5 N
The installation of a magnetic separator has the following benefits for the customer:
- Lower extruder repair costs
- Reduction of the processing equipment downtime
- Expanded possibilities of the using the cleaner regranulate
Applied equipment: Drawer magnet MSS-MC IN 150-5 N
Advantages of the drawer magnet MSS-MC IN 150-5 N
- Two-stage separation
- Massive grate construction enabling the safe manipulation
- Grate can be eqipped with the interposer bars making the cleaning process easier
- Innovative version preventing from cleaving the material inside the separator
- Big variability of connexion
- 18 700 Gauss on the magnetic core and 12 200 Gauss on the lateral area
