Separation of tramp iron from woodchips
Initial status
In the woodworking and paper industry, a part of the input raw material consists of recycled wood chips (from used pallets, old furniture, etc.). That is why this material contains a relatively high percentage of tramp iron (like nails, screws, nuts, staples, wires etc.). In addition, there is used various machinery (e. g., saws, shredders, mills etc.) in the wood recycling plants and some parts of the processing equipment get subsequently into the wood chips (e. g., fragments of knives from shredders, teeth from saws etc.).
Problem
The wooden chips processed by our client (the company MONDI, a world-renowned producer of cartons, packaging materials, paper bags, high-quality kraft paper etc.) were highly contaminated with ferrous particles that the already applied separators were unable to remove. Some of these iron objects repeatedly got into the processing machines and caused frequent serious machinery damage as well as very expensive production downtimes.
Solution
Wooden chips (crushed to a size of up to 250 mm) was transported (outdoors) on a belt conveyor with a working width of 1000 mm at a speed of 2 m/s. We placed our self-cleaning overband magnet DND-AC Mm3F TIGER (that can separate ferrous particles from a distance of up to 350 mm) above this conveyor belt. The application of a very strong magnetic separator eliminated the possibility of penetration of unwanted ferromagnetic objects into the subsequent processing machinery = we fulfilled our client's needs. In addition, the automatic cleaning of the magnetic separator also corresponded with the requirement for the continuous production.
Reasons for the application of the overband magnet DND-AC Mm3F TIGER
The sophisticated design of the self-cleaning magnetic separator DND-AC Mm3F TIGER guarantees a reliable removal of ferrous particles from 1.5 mm in size. Besides, the magnetic core of this separator is relatively large, so it can capture tramp iron transported on the conveyor belt at a relatively high speed (up to 2.5 m/s), what is especially appreciated by clients requiring a large processing capacity. On the top of it, the suspension height of up to 350 mm allows for cleaning of even very high material layers and the automatic cleaning contributes to the comfort and safety of production operations.
