Separation of highly abrasive fragments in a aluminum foundry (case study)

Initial status

Our customer is a manufacturer of aluminum alloys of the highest quality. The alloys find application mainly in the automotive, engineering, electrotechnical and solar industries.

In the production of aluminum alloys, great emphasis is put on recycling, therefore aluminum fragments are processed. Aluminum scrap may be contaminated with iron objects (e. g., broken pieces of production machines).

In order to guarantee the premium quality of the produced aluminum alloys, the perfect removal of any iron tramp from the aluminum particles is needed.

Problem

The fragments to be processed are transported by a chain conveyor. A suitable solution for the separation is a magnetic drum. To achieve a higher separation level, the aluminum fragments are uniformly spread over the entire width of the magnetic drum by means of a vibratory feeder.

The problem, however, is that the aluminum pieces are very abrasive and wear out the magnetic drum cover. If the drum cover is damaged, the entire line has to be shut down, the magnetic drum dismantled and the cover replaced, which is very time-consuming. The consequences are high downtime costs.

Solution

We made an MB 406 F 800 magnetic drum (diam. of 406 mm, width of 800 mm) and fitted it with ferrite magnets. Ferrite magnets are strong enough to separate the iron tramp.

The essential task was to produce a magnetic drum that could treat this kind of abrasive material.

We have long-term experience with such requirements, so we have fitted the magnetic drum with a manganese steel cover. This has led to a significant increase in abrasion resistance. Since then, the customer has not found any perforation of the drum cover. This has significantly reduced the production downtime costs.

Benefits of using the magnetic drum MB 406 F 800 with a manganese wear cover

We know what we are doing! The magnetic drum with a manganese steel cover is abrasion resistant. The customer is really satisfied with our solution!
