Separation of reinforcing steel during concrete crushing (case study)

Initial status

The customer is engaged in concrete recycling.

Problem

The customer uses a mobile crusher to grind the waste concrete. After grinding the concrete, it is necessary to separate the reinforcing steel bars, rods or mesh.  The crushed concrete and the reinforcing steel are transported from the crusher by a conveyor. A magnetic separator had to be installed in this place. A very strong and at the same time lightweight separator was required.The separator had to be light due to its use on mobile crushing equipment. Another customer's requirement was the durability ofthe separator in harsh conditions.

Solution

We proposed to use a self-cleaning overband magnet to suspend over the conveyor. The magnet was made to fit the limited working space on a mobile shredder.

We dealt with the customer's requirements as follows:

  • High magnetic strength - we fitted the overband magnet with the strongest neodymium magnets.Thanks to this design, we achieve a magnetic strength of more than 910 G (at a distance of 200 mm from the separator magnetic core - i.e. at the recommended suspension height of the separator)!
  • Low weight – the standard overbands are equipped with ferrite magnets. These magnets are weaker than neodymium ones and therefore a large number of them are needed to be able to generate a sufficiently strong magnetic field. That was why we applied strong neodymium magnets that can generate a magnetic field with sufficient strength even if there is a smaller number of them in the separator. The result is the low separator weight, which is advantageous when installing this type of separator on mobile crushers.
  • Separator resistance - we have provided the overband magnet with a special abrasion layer, which has increased the separator resistance even when used in demanding conditions such as concrete crushing (sharp pieces of iron steel reinforcements can no longer damage the magnetic core).
