Two-stage magnetic separation in wood waste recycling (case study)

Initial status

A leading manufacturer of mobile shredders uses overband magnets in its equipment. However, there are applications, such as wood waste recycling, where the occurrence of ferrous contaminants is very high. 


Problem

A customer engaged in wood waste recycling requires that the wood fraction is completely free of tramp iron. Taking into account the fact that there is a big quantity of ferromagnetic particles in the wood waste, a single-stage separation (= carried out by the overband magnet) is insufficient.

Solution

The overband magnet, as standard equipment for mobile crushers, forms only the first stage of magnetic separation. However, in the case of a high presence of tramp iron and a strict requirement for maximum purity of the final product, a single-stage separation is unsatisfactory.

That is why we recommended replacing the original head pulley in the belt conveyor by a magnetic pulley for continuous automatic removal of damaging tramp iron.

We manufacture the magnetic pulley exactly according to the customer's dimensional requirements, so that it can replace the original conveyor head pulley. Then, it is easy for manufacturers of mobile sorting lines to replace a standard head pulley with a magnetic one. There are no requirements for modification of their equipment.

We fitted the magnetic pulley with very strong neodymium magnets. Such a magnetic pulley can separate not only small metal particles but together with an overband magnet (suspended above the belt conveyor) allows two-stage (= perfect) separation.

The principle of two-stage magnetic separation:

  • 1st stage of separation = overband magnet:
    It separates the vast majority of tramp iron - especially from the upper part of the material layer transported on the conveyor belt.
  • 2nd stage of separation = magnetic cylinder:
    It will reliably remove the remaining ferrous objects. It can also separate iron particles from the bottom layer of material transported on the conveyor.

We can produce overbands and magnetic pulleys to be fully compatible with mobile shredders of different brands! Production in the design of a mobile crusher (private label) is a matter of course.
